“India” (WWU Sculpture 3D scan)

In working with a student from large lecture art class, whom are scanning the sculptures across our camps, we ran into a few snags scanning “India.” The iSense scanner had a hard time with initiating the scan of this sculpture due to its flat surfaces. And, I know have to investigate why the firmware can not take a calibration update.

So, thinking outside the box, I worked with this student to stitch this scan using 180 still images shot off a Sony A6000 mirrorless camera and used a process of 3D scanning called Photogrammetry. Previously, I experimented with a beta app called Momento by Autodesk. It has now been rebranded and relaunched under ReMake. And I have to say, I am greatly impressed with the output. However, rendering a scene this large and this detailed takes several hours.

It made me reminiscent of the early days of editing HD video…where you would just walk away and grab lunch and come back to a hopefully completed project (lol).
