My Names Jaiden

I enjoy taking advantage of college life, making new friends as often as I can. When I’m not socializing I’m either appreciating music and art, crying to movies, or writing.

(my dorm while living at Western)

“I have always considered myself a good writer. It has been an expectation that has followed me my whole education, as it has with others. The difference, however, is that I was extremely hard on myself in this area. I’ve come to a point in my life where I can take pride in what I write, but with a grain of salt. I still acknowledge that I am only 18 and inexperienced at most things, including literature.” – Jaiden Sanders.

I wrote this before entering the second quarter of my freshman year here at Western. Coming into my first English class, I had a lot of expectations. With every single one, I was inaccurate. I thought I would have to hone in on my writing with lots of essays and revision practices. I thought of English 101 as a chance to learn the University’s expectation for literacy. Instead, I learned the University’s expectation of me, a college student. I did this learning through several projects throughout the quarter, and now I want to share them with you.

(a scene from one of my favorite books)

“We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of 30 and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to feel nothing so as not to feel anything—what a waste!”
