Murmurs: New Work by Yan Wang

Our first exhibition for fall is open 10AM – 6PM Monday through Thursday and by appointment.

Yan Wang is a current student double majoring in the Art Studio and Design program at Western Washington University. Studying and exploring different fields help shape her visual language. Her focus is to document what we are experiencing at present as a photographer and designer.

Artist Statement:

This collection of photographs were generated from a pinhole camera which was manually converted from a normal digital camera. The principles of the pinhole camera are the foundation of photography today since modern cameras evolved from the pinhole camera. It is known as camera obscura whose history can be traced back to the5th century BCE. The exploration of this very traditional photographic method helps expand the understanding of how we humans keep trying to capture moments and secure them on paper. The body of work is also characterized by combining the high-resolution quality of the digital camera and the blurry effect of the pinhole camera. With this combination, the audience’s usual visual input process will be disrupted because people are always looking for seeing clear things.Without using the viewfinder, the photo-taking process creates a sense of intuitiveness. It also renders the process as a meditation session since it forces direct communications with the environment——no thoughts on the frame, shutter speed, or aperture. Murmurs, the title of the show, places nature’s voices murmuring in the background of the pandemic into the spotlight and reminds people of the precious things that still give us warmth and hope.
