Neurosurgery Internship

The Program: The Neurosurgery Internship is offered in conjunction with the Cascade Brain and Spine Center (CBSC), and St. Joseph’s hospital. In this 10-week program, Behavioral Neuroscience undergraduate students accepted into the internship program should expect to shadow between 4 and 10 hours per week with a physician mentor from the CBSC. The program is very competitive, offering an exciting opportunity for highly motivated students interested in pursuing higher education (MD, PhD, or MD/PhD) and careers in Medicine and Clinical Research.
The Experience: Interns will experience the day-to-day operations of medical practice. All Interns will shadow a neurosurgeon in a medical office and observe the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of a variety of neurological and neurosurgical cases. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend surgeries and observe post operative care in the hospital. Interns can engage in independent study by researching specific clinical conditions, surgical treatments, intended outcomes and prognosis. During the internship weekly reports are submitted. Students may also present key aspects of their internship at Psychfest, the annual psychology research conference held in June.
Cost of the Program: Although the Internship in Neurosurgery Program itself is free, students accepted into the program must undergo health and security screening and purchase malpractice insurance. The cost of these procedures will be approximately $40.

Neurodiagnostic Internship

The Program: The Neurodiagnostic Internship is offered in conjunction with the Peacehealth Neurodiagnostic Clinic, Birchwood Neurology Clinic, and St. Joseph’s hospital. In this 10-week program, Behavioral Neuroscience undergraduate students accepted into the internship program will work 3-4 hours per week with a Neurodiagnostic Technologist (Jennifer Bode) from Peacehealth. The program is very competitive, offering an exciting opportunity for highly motivated students interested in pursuing graduate school and careers in Medicine and Clinical Research.
The Experience: Interns will experience the day-to-day operations of a neurodiagnostic technologist. All Interns will shadow a neurodiagnostic technologist in out-patient clinic and hospital settings and learn about common neurological disorders and the role of a neurodiagnostic technologist in a neurology practice. Interns will also have the opportunity to shadow a neurodiuagnostic technologist as they utilize techniques that include Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCV), Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) as well as Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP). During the internship weekly reports are submitted. Students may also present key aspects of their internship at Psychfest, the annual psychology research conference held in June.

TMS Tech Internship

The Program: The TMS Technician Internship is offered in conjunction with SeattleNTC at the Bellingham Clinic Location. In this 10-week program, Behavioral Neuroscience undergraduate students accepted into the internship program will work 3-4 hours per week with a TMS Technician and Neuropsychiatrists from SeattleNTC. The program is very competitive, offering an exciting opportunity for highly motivated students interested in pursuing graduate school and careers in Medicine and Clinical Research.
The Experience: Interns will experience the day-to-day operations of a Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center. All Interns will shadow a TMS Technician in out-patient clinic setting and learn about common psychiatric disorders and the role of a TMS Technician and Neuropsychiatrists in a Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center practice. Interns will have the opportunity to shadow a TMS Technician as they utilize therapies that include Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Esketamine, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ETC), Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). During the internship weekly reports are submitted. Students may also present key aspects of their internship at Psychfest, the annual psychology research conference held in June.

Psychiatry (Online) Internship

The Program: The Psychiatry Internship is offered in conjunction with Henry S. Levine, MD. In this 10-week program, Behavioral Neuroscience undergraduate students accepted into the internship program will meet weekly online with Henry S. Levine, MD. There is also an optional tour of the St. Joseph’s hospital psychiatric care unit. The program is very competitive, offering an exciting opportunity for highly motivated students interested in pursuing higher education (MD, PhD, or MD/PhD) and careers in Medicine and Clinical Research.
The Virtual Experience: Interns will learn about the day-to-day operations of psychiatry practice. All Interns will attend weekly online presentations teaching the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of a variety of cases. During the internship weekly reports are submitted. Students may also present key aspects of their internship at Psychfest, the annual psychology research conference held in June.
Cost of the Program: Although the Virtual Internship in Psychiatry Program itself is free, students accepted into the program must have access to internet and be able to attend online presentations with audio/video capabilities.

Application is Open for Placement into Virtual Psychiatry Internship Only
The deadline to apply is Monday, December 2nd at 5:00pm. The application is for placing students during both winter and spring quarters. Please email bns@wwu.edu with any questions about the internship experience or application.
To be eligible for a BNS Internship students must meet the following requirements:
1. Be accepted into the Behavioral Neuroscience Program.
2. Be enrolled as a WWU undergraduate student at the time of the internship
3. Have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.9 at the time of applying.
In addition to these requirements, applicants must respond to the following essay questions on the application. There is no minimum or maximum response length, but be clear and concise.

- List and briefly describe your previous research and clinical experience (paid and voluntary).
- Optionally provide additional comments and information that you think makes you well suited to this program.
