Seki’ – the sockeye salmon, represents life and intelligence.
Kwelengsen – the eagle, represents bold strength and pride.
Now’ Si’am (Hello my friend).
One day I was swimming through Hails Pass and I jumped over a net, as I was flying through the air
I spotted Kwelengsen. He laughed and said, “What are you doing Seki’?”
“I have to make it to the river to spawn.” I replied
“How did you see that net?” He asked.
“Those Lummi’s always drift there. Your brother told me to watch out Sockeye season just opened
today,” I answered.
“Well, you must go way around the city too because the water is a strange color to day.” He warned.
“My poor babies are going to learn fast because there are many more challenges to survive and
complete the circle these days.” I expressed my concern to him.
“You just make it to the river, and we will watch your children.” He said.
“Please don’t let my body go to waste, or drift into the bay after I spawn, make sure your kids get
enough to eat.” I told him.
“You are always thinking of the young ones Seki’.” He replied.
“Well we all have to work together to ensure that life goes on!” I told him.
“I noticed you gained a new symbol on your back.” Kwelengsen remarked.
“Yes I wear it in honor of the sky beings, for without you loyally watching out for us, I would have
never had made it this far. And I noticed that you also are decorated with a new design.”
I responded.
“Ah yes, I am proud to represent you and your children in my wings for without you, what would we
feed our children.” He replied.
“I am so blessed to have had you in my life Kwelengsen! I have enjoyed working as one mind to
complete the circle of life with you.” I concluded to him.
“Lang-nexw sen se Si’am! (I will see you later my friend) On the other side.”
