What are sport clubs?
Western Washington University’s sport club program gives students the opportunity to participate in competitive and recreational sports, most of which are not offered as varsity athletics. Sport club teams have the opportunity to practice, take part in tournaments and compete at specialized levels. While some are recreational, most are highly competitive. Sport clubs are distinguished as student-initiated and student-run programs that allow many opportunities for leadership and decision-making. Sport clubs are allotted a small budget from Western Washington University but raise funds primarily by team dues, fundraising efforts and donations.
How can I become a member?
Most Sport Clubs recruit new members in the beginning of Fall Quarter but some take new members at any point of the year. To inquire more information about a specific club, contact names, email addresses and links to team websites are available on this website through the active teams link.
All Sport Club student-athletes are required to have a physical completed that determines that they are clear to participate without restrictions. They also must have a valid form of primary medical insurance and complete the Player Registration Form.
Why should I join / what are the benefits?
The sport club program brings together people that share common interests and offers members the opportunity to grow within their leadership, team work, and competitive skills. Whether you are seeking a high level of competition, learning a new sport or skill, or simply wanting to meet new people or enjoy some recreational fun, club sports can offer you a great experience.
How much experience do I need to have in order to join?
In order to join you do not have to be an expert within the sport. Some clubs do have try-outs for an “A” team but some have “B” teams that allow for different levels of competition and participation. Many clubs will work with you to help develop your skills in order to become a more competitive player in the future.
How can I donate to a team?
Teams accept donations through the Western Washington University Foundation. Donations can be made online at www.wwu.edu/give. In the “Please designate my gift to the following” section make sure to select the “For the following college, department, team, or program” option and enter the name of the club sport you would like to make a donation to. Donations can also be made over the phone at (360) 650-3027.
How much does it cost to be apart of the sport club program?
The cost of being apart of a sport club greatly varies depending on which club you are interested in joining. Each team has team dues either annually or quarterly but additional costs could be added depending on gear, travel and other activities.
How do I develop a new sport club?
If you have an interest in developing a new sport club, the first step is to contact the Sport Clubs Coordinator to express your interest. You can contact her by email at Caitlin.Sommers@wwu.edu or by phone at (360) 650-4191. Next you must provide a roster with at least 10 members who would be interested in joining the new club. At this point the Assistant Director of Sport Clubs will need to approve your idea in order to allow you to present your proposal to the Sport Club President’s Council. Included in the presentation must be a statement as to why this club will be beneficial to the University, Sport Club Department and the students participating in the club as well. Be sure to demonstrate the availability of competition in the area (i.e.: Baseball competes in the NCBA, which is comprised of over 120 teams with 4 other teams in WWU’s conference). Sell yourself as to why it is beneficial to take on your club.
The Sport Club program exists to provide competitive intercollegiate opportunities for student-athletes within certain sport disciplines. We will only consider sports that the university doesn’t already offer as a varsity sport. If you would like to propose a new sport please make sure to research whether or not there is an existing intercollegiate club system to compete in and what schools in the local pacific northwest region support a team. If you have any further questions as to which sport disciplines we would consider please inquire by sending an email to the Sport Clubs Coordinator.
Do you have to be a Western Washington University student to be a member of a sport club?
Not all sport clubs require you to be a Western Washington University student but most clubs are required to follow their club affiliation guidelines in regards to membership and credit status. To inquire more detailed information about a specific club, contact the leadership listed above.
