The theme of contemplation, introspection, longing and loss is a common one in writing genres. In fact, it seems to favor the written word, as visual mediums can only imply these things, writing can reveal them. Although, it can be said that suggesting feelings in writing can imbue it with more emotional meaning.
While it was a fun exercise to create written works that mimic these feelings of nostalgia and thoughts on the past, I preferred to examine the works of more accomplished writers and how they approached this topic. My favorite of the two examples I chose was Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Not Taken, as I find it incredibly interesting how many people take it at face value.
I’d like to conclude this project by saying that contemplation can be a fickle thing. While it can be beneficial to consider things silently, especially when you’re not able to talk about them aloud, it can also lead you to imbue things with false meaning and importance, and cause you to live in silence.
