Intro to Comic Sans

Our initial aim when starting this research project was to find where the stigma around Comic Sans comes from, and if there truly is a stigma against this typeface. Most people find the idea of this project rather random and funny, but when asked about their own opinions on the typeface they do become passionate about either liking or disliking the font. This became apparent while presenting a poster on this topic, when a listener said “I like Comic Sans, but it just shows even more how our of the norm I am”. When it comes to online media there is quite a bit out there relating to the dislike of the font, with many jokes and memes being created at the detriment of the font. We will be looking into research done by people like Michael L. Bernard, Rachel Moeller, and many more, to see if there is a real reason why people dislike Comic Sans, or if it is something that has become ingrained in our society due to media. We were able to pair research done by experts, but also conducted our own research through online methods. Based on our ages the expected group taking these research polls will be between 18 and 22. Essentially we will be asking questions that include; Is there something about the font that people try to avoid? Do people dislike the font because they have been conditioned to do so? Do people truly dislike the font? When combining these questions we came up with: Has mainstream media affected the perception of Comic Sans negatively, or do people such as high school and college students dislike the style for aesthetic reasons?
