  4. And Alisa gave an elevator pitch for an art comic of her own design

Discussion: Lynda Barry

We discussed:

  • The difficulty of Barry’s form: how it doesn’t guide the eye in typical ways, how it has multiple layers of text and image competing
  • Some students see the form as inviting, something to get lost in, something they could emulate in their own work
  • The usefulness of Barry’s journalling practice for brainstorming, idea mapping, etc
  • Barry’s model of bravery, drawing without worries about good or bad
  • We will practice some of her techiques in future classes
