Presenters
- Jacob presented about his Why Comics project. He found himself needing to process through his depression in writing, and it was Lynda Barry’s methods that allowed him to overcome his fear of drawing badly and begin expressing himself. He drew inspiration from Matt Phalan’s narrative of comig to drawing late in life. Overall, Jacob values simplicity and clarity. Jabob presented a TED Talk version of his statement at a community event in Bellingham.
- Courtney presented about her Why Comics project. She is drawn to the way comics allow her to communicate with a minimum of words. She also gave an elevator pitch for a nonfiction comic about writing a convincing cover letter tailored to your professional identity.
- Hanae presented a piece about the artist Humon (Humon.deviantart.com/art, a Scandanavian artists who writes about Scandanavian culture, diversity, and disability. She draws from her own experience, but also represents multiple non-mainstream experiences in order to promote empathy while also entertaining and re-purposing traditional folk stories and religious stories.
- She then presented her re-mediated Why Comics statement, which she drew as a single-paged comic. She describes how she discovered C Thompson’s Habibi and other realist, scholarly comic works.
- Megan and Nicole gave a collaborative pitch for a nonfiction comic about the new Republican healthcare bill. The comic would be modeled on Kot’s Material, tracking four character’s experience if it came into law. It would follow a pregnant mother, a fetus, an elderly woman, and a man with mental illness.
- Amberly presented about her rhetorical analysis report about Lumberjanes. Her report demonstrates how medium and message work together, drawing the attention of young girls to hammer home its message of empowerment and strength.
- Epiphanie presented about her why comics statement. She talks about first encountering the graphic novel Ghost World. She discusses the differences between the film and the graphic novel, drawing out the poetic power of the comics medium, the way it allows you to pause and contort time as you experience the work.
- Hayley gave a drawing demonstration of a ghost figure she’s been drawing for years.
- Justin have a drawing demonstration of his first attempts at drawing based on the hard-lined sketched style of the comic The Few. He uses basic straight lines to construct a basic face shape without worrying too much about symmetry or beauty of line.
- Megan gave a pitch for a nonfiction comic about Melia and Sasha Obama, rendered as superheros righting wrongs and teaching lessons. Think School House Rock.
- Margaret told a story about Please Keep Warm (Our Own Devices), a comic by Michael Sweater. It uses simple cartoony line drawings of cure animals in brutal, “savage” stories. A color version of the comic is posted on Vice.com, twitter, and instagram.
