Presentations

  • Alisa presented her finalized art comic prototype about Puppie’s life. She wasn’t pleased with the line work in her original (ink filled in colored ink), but she switched to colored pencil which allows for clearer and bolder pictures (over emphasis on words). It works better with her desire to juxtapose childish storybook art with adult horrors about death and hardship.
    • She emailed her prototype to Michael Deforge (Adventure Time) as her bravery test bonus. GREAT JOB!
    • She also presented her finalized Why Comics statement, which she rendered as a full color comic. It explores her personal connections to comics writing, going back to her kindergarten experiences in Japan, her return to comics after studying fine art, and her embracing her own cartoon style.
  • Rock gave a pitch for a scholarly comic Nochtvexen (sp) about Soviet women fighter pilots who terrorized Nazi Germany during WWII. They were feared by their enemies, and were extremely deadly. A comic would allow focus on the mechanics of WWII flight technology while also telling this amazing story of badass women warriors.
    • He then presented his contrasting comics collage about Kill Shakespeare, a 2015 fantasy about a fantacy world where Shakespeare’s characters occupy a world where S himself is the magical creator. Rock’s collages compares the comic’s characters to historical paintings of the characters, drawing contrast but also drawing out traditional iconography for portraying the characters historically. He observes enormous differences in the ways women are depicted, but no strong differences at all in portrayals of the males.
  • Devon presented her revised Why Comics statement about her connection to comics through comic book movies. Post workshop, she edited and refined the language to be more assertive; in addition, she drew out how comics will fit into her career going forward (studying literature and humanities in grad school).
