Presenters

  • Sandra presented her Why Comics statement describes her childhood watching saterday morning cartoons, which led her to love anime and manga later on. The action was always intelligable to her, and as she grew she could connect to themes and character depth (as well as authors biased worldviews).
    • She then presented a history of the comic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which is also what she picked for her current monthly reading)
  • Megan presented her contrasting collage of three comics from DC: Scooby Doo Apocalypse, Flinstones, and PowerPuff Girls–all featuring strong female characters. Even drawn from so many comics, the collage only locates a small number of characters.
  • Sam presented his why comics statement. He describes being obsessed with hip hop in high school as his entry way into creative expression. He noticed how deeply embedded comics were in hip hop. It’s about intention and style, not necessarily conventional means of expression.
    • he then presented his collage, showing overlaps between hip hop and comics. He used hip hop album covers that evoke comics, and then comic covers that evoke hip hip albums.
  • Matthew presented an elevator pitch. It is a futuristic apocalypse story about the people who survived and their new lives. The protagonist is a diver who hunts for salvaged goods underwater. The background includes a giant whale attack and many themes of aquatic creepy exploration.
  • Kieran presented his prototype for his art comic Steel Lily. His prototype is comprised of a cover and first page of the comic. It is set in Seattle, and the early pages use bright colors and city images, to contrast with the later plot’s darker turn.
  • Amberley presented her art comic prototype about her adventures with her adorable but ineffectual cat.
  • Epiphanie presented a collage contrasting the styles of Daniel Close (Ghost World) and Jeremey Hans (The Beauty). The collage is presented as a comic.
    • She then presented her rhetorical analysis of The Beauty, focused on the connection between the medium and the message of the piece. She observes that the medium renders it difficult to distinguish those infected with the Beauty disease, which serves an important message.
  • Margaret presented her why comics statement, which turned out to be an illustrated  autobiographical (but in the third person) narrative. The illustrations show elements of her environment growing up, Alice falling down the hole to neverland, boars and cacti from Arizona, her uncle who is homeless and schizophrenic. Ends with her inspired to use her drawing to improve the materials for Alateen.
  • Julia presented an academic comics pitch for a comic about hidden queer figures in American history: politicians, civil rights leaders, activists, entertainers, etc. Dialogue will be drawn from real life quotations.
  • Marcus presented his Why Comics statment, in which he discusses his interest in storytelling, especially children’s books. He draws on this interest for his work in comics.
    • He then presented a collage of two current comics Curse Words and Underwinter.
