Presentations:

  • Justin H presented his finalized rhetorical analysis of Habibi, examining the way it employs and works with Orientalist (and counter-Orientalist) imagery and art historical traditions.
  • Jacob E presented about presentation on the comic Over the Garden Wall by Pat McHale. The comic itself began as an add-on to an animated short series produced for Cartoon Network. The series doesn’t progress through narrative time in a linear fashion.
    • He then showed a contrasting collage of another comic attached to the Over the Garden Wall series called “Kitty Goes to School.”
  • Courtney presented an interview-based piece about Justin Nguyen, creator of Descender. Her piece focuses on Nguyen’s drawing and painting method.
  • Brendan presented his scholarly collage about Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder).
    • He then presented his finalized rhetorical analysis of Monstress, focusing on the important allusions to Japanese folklore and the work of HP Lovecraft.
  • Sandra presented a comics collage comparing Sailor Moon to YuYu Hajusho.
    • She then presented a prototype of her finalized comic, called Spring Break, which tells the semi-audobiographical story of a bunny’s solo adventures over spring break.
  • Epiphanie gave a pitch for an academic comic about existentialism and absurdism. The comic would explore the canon of exestentialist literature and art, while also teaching about the background of the movement itself.
    • She also presented her collage of portraits of pivotal thinkers and writers of the period, arranged by their centrality.
  • Rock presented his finalized prototype of Shitty Stories about Shitty People, a story about celebrity culture, drawn on index cards using stick figure drawings.
  • Celine pitched an academic comic about punctuation, designed for elementary school age children, to get them engaged and interested in punctuation use. Each major kind of punctuation will be rendered as a character.
    • She then showed her scholarly collage which she created in the shape of a question mark. The collage incorporates pages from grammar books, lesson plans, etc
  • Matthew W presented his finalized Why Comics statement, which covers his early life with supermarket comics (Archie etc), then falling for cartoons, then finding a middle route of engagement with comics though analysis and finally creation.
  • Brie presented her interview with Blackie Shepherd, in which they talked about the difficulty of the comics industry, about the detailed process he goes through, about his inspirations in art and in reading comics.
  • Natalie presented her finalized Why Comics statement, discussing her approach to comics reading as a literature major. Since she had no real experience with the medium, McCloud’s focus on sequential art as a literary tool helped not only to get her to analyze comics, but also to think differently about storytelling (in medieval literature).
  • Kate presented her collage of the artists she follows on instagram. The long list of amazing artists and their @s are listed on canvas
  • Keegan gave an elevator pitch for an office-place comic called the Tower, about two men and a penguin who get into hilarious hijinks at work.
  • Jacob S then gave a pitch for creating a nonfiction comic based on Abbott’s Flatland.
