Logistics and Announcements

  • Get books if you haven’t
  • Begin reading McCloud and Barry

Group Challenge: Comic Book Show and Tell

Group size: 3 – 4 students

Give a show-and-tell about one comic book you brought today. Try to cover:

  • What is it?
  • What is its communication style?
  • What’s it’s audience?
  • What’s unique about its materiality?

Keep track of whether any of these questions is harder than the others.

Observations:

  • Differences in what brought in: trade paperback (compiles 4-6 issues of a monthly comic, usually a single), single issue (with cliffhanger), pages of a web comic
    • How do they work with continuity
  • Different age bracket in examples: kids, tween/bridge, adults
    • Observable difference: art work (violence, nudity)  content/context
  • Different art styles
    • You could read the comics purely through facial expression

Demonstration: Score Card in Detail

These slides walk through more detailed versions of each project from the score card. Feel free to email me to test out possible ideas for these projects.
