Disability Pedagogy Group

The Disability Pedagogy Group is a place for teachers, student support staff, education students from any institution or grade level. We meet to discuss issues related to teaching, learning, and disability. We have three aims: First, this group creates a space for disabled people to talk about their lives as teachers. This often includes conversations about ableism and poor access in education. Second, it is a place to share best practices for supporting disabled students. Third, it is a place to talk about teaching disability studies or related fields. Come to offer support and learn from the experiences of other teachers.

  • What is it like to be a disabled teacher?
  • How can we care for and support our disabled students?
  • How can I teach disability studies concepts in my class?

This group is made for and by disabled people, though nondisabled allies are welcome to participate. We welcome participants from any teaching context, not limited to those working in higher education or at Western Washington University specifically.

Disability Pedagogy Group meets every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at 5-6pm Pacific Time on Zoom

Disability Justice Collaborative

The Disability Justice Collaborative is open to anyone, regardless of who you are, what you do for work, or where in the world you live. The group focuses on the needs of disabled people. The group has two aims. First, it offers a place for disabled people to get together and talk about their lives. Second, it gives us a chance to discuss broader disability issues, such as politics or media.

Our conversations draw upon a Disability Justice framework. This approach shows that disabled people should be the experts on disability issues. We talk about our complex lives to help us build community and work for change.

  • What role does disability play in your life?
  • How do factors such as disability discrimination and accessibility affect your life?
  • How can we support one another as a disability community?
  • What role can allies play in the mission of disability justice?

This group is intentionally created by and for disabled people. Nondisabled allies are welcome to participate. All are welcome, regardless of what job you do (if any), your age, your disability status, or your location in the world.

Disability Justice Collaborative meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 5-6pm Pacific Time on Zoom

WWU’s main campus occupies the ancestral homelands of the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, Coast Salish Peoples who have lived in the Salish Sea basin and throughout the San Juan Islands and North Cascades watershed from time immemorial. We express our deepest respect and gratitude to our Indigenous neighbors for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
