Budget Timeline:
Nominate and Vote a Faculty advisor to attend S&A meetings. Minutes & Updating the website.
Vote approval of the minutes – postponed till next meeting so everyone can read them for approval.
Guest Presenter – Suzanne Blais
Represents the Western Window internship program. Started 2011. Hands on professional level film making, video on campus. No major for students in film. An opportunity for them to get solid experience. They have been on the air with the Western Window television show.
Western View is now on the air again. The funding was put on hold. The differences between the two programs. No old shows are accessible. The show has students producing anywhere before 4-6 minute segments, magazine style show. Broadcast from Vancouver, locally and on the web. The projects range from narrative film making, 1950’s live television, student written plays, produced, sets, scene shop by Cash & Carry, and large types of programs. Ended up with many of the students getting jobs after they graduated. They are now in television news, and working in film in Seattle, etc. They need some stable funding, they have been doing it all without a budget. Intermittent support from Steve Swan and University of Communications but nothing is stable and no academic home department. Open to anybody. Students find out by Suzanne networking. She tries to get the word out. There is over 300 students that have gone through the program since it started. They take internship credit through college of choice, through Fairhaven or volunteer. 12 students are there this year. Mark Miller (Com Department) wants to give his students broader opportunity and he funnels the students her way. There is no class. There is no Western View. Mark Miller funding was cancelled. Auditor found funding
inappropriate for the Com Class, because they didn’t have a student or faculty here, which is different from the other constituents. The main concern is that TV show the funding was for didn’t exist. Other students couldn’t participate but they could watch. Suzanne’s program fits the criteria. There is a TV show, additional students can participate. Has Associated Students been approached? No, she hasn’t. Seemed to make sense to approach DRAC and there was a line item in the budget. Ted, “DRAC is departmentally related activities, and if there can be a connection with the class that Mark Miller does, and do the Window on Western with the class. Short of that if there is no connection, Associated Students would be a better route. Does Window on Western have a legitimate replacement of Western View.
Bianco requests a written proposal to be reviewed. How much funds, how they will be used, the support structure. Work through the departmental structure.
Meeting Schedule:
January 26,
2016
Summer Kilpsun – approval for the budget to be presented. Klipsun summer front was not submitted last year in time for this year’s approval.
Submitting summer budget before the AY Budget? Simultaneous is fine, and you can work on it whenever you want. Encourage to do both summer and current Academic at the same time the Academic year.
Klipsun may need to suggest a budget and request it from the DRAC reserve.
Time Frame:
Fall Quarter – Conduct elections of officer and orientation. S&A orientation meeting for
new members. We chose our elected rep, except for the faculty rep. Fall quarter has already been distributed.
Winter Quarter – S&A Fee committee begin budget discussion and provide us with a time line of when they are due. Typically it is early spring quarter, however they may need them by the end of winter quarter. Ted anticipates that he needs to compile them, so the sooner this committee and the members can get them to Ted, the easier it will be for this committee to vote and approve this. He is leaving at the end of January, and would like to look at them.
Academic year, presentation, discussion, summer presentations and discussions.
Spring Quarter – academic year presentations are made by students. DRAC faculty advisor to the S&A fee committee and Ted Sealey is there to be supportive. S&A does a few open hearings, discusses and reviews. S&A budget approved get sent on to the board of trustees with
recommendations and they put their stamp of approval or come back with changes. Spring quarter enrollment determines how much money is available this fiscal year 2016.
Last meeting is determined how reserves are distributed.
Would it be possible on the 26 to have a DRAC budget to present to Ted from Suzanne Blais, Music Klipsun summer proposal, and Theatre.
If we can send something electronically on the budgets, Ted and Ichi can work on them, it will be a lot easier for them to prepare a preliminary spreadsheet. An early draft.
We don’t know the S&A dates, we don’t know when we are meeting. S&A dictates our meetings.
Student representatives from DRAC are Kenny & Julianna.
Moving forward for Faculty representatives – we don’t have a full voting roster. A faculty member would be happy to do it when a time is known. Consistent representation and strong students is needed at those meetings. Advice, support and consulting role is important. If information from S&A is available, we could get someone who could volunteer.
Meeting adjourned 9:51 p.m.
