Apocalyptic Poetry

Dystopian poetry is a new theme to me, and while exploring I found that I really enjoyed it. While many of the other genres you will find on this site focused on a broad topic or political themes, the poetry was very expressive and more feeling based. Some of the poems are heart-wrenching and some are angry, some are short and some are extremely long. All of that being said there can be expansive differences between various works of dystopian poetry.

Both poetry as a genre and dystopia as a theme are flexible in how you use them, so it is no surprise that there are plenty of examples of dystopian poetry. I think that this type of writing is more profound than many of the other genres I wrote about, or at least has the potential to be, but I also think that less people interact with poetry on a regular basis than they interact with movies or videogames.

The two poems I have linked to this page below are vastly different than one another. The first The Waste Land is considered a classic. This poem utilizes expansive imagery and emotion, going from angry to sad in its different sections. This poem tells a story and takes its time doing so. I highly recommend that you read it. The second poem Your Utopia, Our Dystopia is less clear on what it is describing, it is shorter, in fact this poem is shorter then some of the verses in the first poem. This poem focuses on one snapshot, making you feel the emotion of that one instance in time. This poem was published online in 2015. While these poems are unalike in so many ways, they are connected through their dystopian themes of conflict and suffering.
