ELP Offerings
Sessions will be offered as hybrid (face-to-face/online), online only or in person only. Details of the current workshops can be found on the “Home” page.
Courses are set up through Canvas. You will receive an E-mail to your WWU address to accept an invitation to the course. From there you will be connected to the course instructors and find additional course content.
Curriculum & Workshop Descriptions
All Employee Language Program offerings are facilitated by upper division students in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Western. Please see below for recommended background levels and workshop descriptions. Workshops are repeatable, depending on skill level.
Note: Not all workshops are offered every quarter.
French Workshops
French: Conversation Partners
Recommended Background:Workshops taught at this level are designed for individuals at all levels.
Description:Workshop participants schedule one-on-one discussion sessions with an Employee Language Program workshop facilitator. In these sessions, participants will work on their listening and speaking skills.
Spanish Workshops
Spanish: Level 1: Basic Conversation
Recommended Background: Workshops taught at this level are designed for people with little or no previous exposure to Spanish (including those who might have had some Spanish years ago but who currently have little or no conversational fluency).
Description: Participants starting at this level are not expected to have any prior knowledge of Spanish. Workshop activities will focus on phrases and special topics to help build vocabulary and knowledge of simple grammar structures for basic conversational fluency.
Spanish: Level 2: Basic Conversation
Recommended Background: Workshops taught at this level are designed for people who have some prior experience with Spanish and limited conversational ability or for those who have completed Basic Conversation, Level 1.
Description: Participants starting at this level should be able to talk in very basic terms about daily activities, family or work relationships, hobbies, likes and dislikes, and related topics. Workshop activities will help participants build vocabulary and simple grammar structures to communicate with more conversational fluency.
Spanish: Level 3: Basic Conversation
Recommended Background: Workshops taught at this level are designed for people with prior experience with Spanish and conversational ability, or for those who have completed a Level 2 workshop.
