Workshop Facilitators
Responsibilities
- Lead conversation-based workshops that allow program participants to develop their language skills and cultural competence
- Connect program participants to cultural and language-learning resources in the classroom and beyond.
- Demonstrate flexibility in meeting participants’ needs and create a learning environment that is flexible, welcoming, and engaging.
- Foster open communication in order to gauge the progress by participants in achieving their language goals
- Collaborate with WELP cohort to lead workshops, develop teaching materials, and develop new workshops
- Maintain high standards of professionalism and awareness of the role WELPs play in representing MCL and Western to the campus community and beyond.
- Notify curriculum coordinator and class (via Canvas) in case of an absence.
- Report hours according to expectations and work completed.
Position Descriptions
Faculty Assistant 2 (Employee Language Program Facilitator 2)
Under general supervision, performs duties in an instructional setting. Delivers workshops for the Employee Language Program for up to 20 participants. Develops training and workshop materials.
This classification is used for facilitators in their first three quarters of employment.
Faculty Assistant 3 (Employee Language Program Facilitator 3)
Under minimal supervision, performs duties in an instructional setting. Delivers workshops for the Employee Language Program for up to 20 participants. Develops training and workshop materials. May mentor incoming facilitators.
This classification is used for facilitators in their fourth quarter–and beyond–of employment.
Hours and Pay
Work Load/Time Commitment
Note: Depending on the workshop and/or quarterly commitment, some of the items below may not apply:
- Classroom time: 1 or 2 times a week; 50 minutes per session
- Weekly facilitator meeting: Once a week; 1 hour meeting
- Lesson Planning: Approximately 3 hours per week
- Conversation partner meetings: Once a week; time commitment agreed upon with participant
- Work Team Responsibilities: team/role dependent
Facilitators are paid for their time leading workshops, for curriculum development/preparation, and for attending program meetings/events. Generally, for each (1) hour of in-workshop time, it is estimated that facilitators report approximately one and a half (1.5) hours of preparation time. For a two (2) hour, weekly workshop, facilitators will submit approximately five (5) hours.
Coordinators
Position Description and Responsibilities
The curriculum coordinator is in charge of developing the curriculum for each level and for each individual workshop; supporting student facilitators in their development as language instructors; and supporting participants in their study of the language and facilitating their experience with the program.
Specifically, the curriculum coordinator:
- structures workshop content and selects materials;
- provides pedagogical and instructional methods support, including the use of Canvas or other instructional technologies;
- ensures curriculum continuity across workshops and levels;
- supervises student facilitators through regular meetings, periodic observation of their workshops, and other guidance as relevant;
- schedules workshops and facilitators to lead them;
- approves student facilitator hours;
- provides support for participant issues; and
- carries out other program-related duties as necessary.
