Zoe Ballering has won the 2022 Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Short Fiction from the University of North Texas Press. The winner of the prestigious prize receives $1000 and the publication of their collection. There Is Only Us, which began as Zoe’s MFA thesis, will appear this fall.

After graduating from Western, Dan Langager worked as a broadcast reporter in Wenatchee. In January of this year, he took a new job in a new sector as the Technical Communications Manager at the Northwest Horticultural Council, a non-profit trade association that works on behalf of the tree fruit industry of the Pacific Northwest and is based in Yakima. He still uses the skills he gained from his English and Journalism degrees every day.
Sara Long’s three poems, “Feral Sterile Honey Baby,” “Perennial Ghost,” and “The Vast Loneliness of Living on the Ground” were published in volume 4, issue 3 of Night Picnic.
McKenzie Grenz recently accepted a position as a Career Development Counselor with People For People in their employment and training department.
Joy Barber received her JD with High Honors and a Certificate in American Indian Law from the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana in May 2021. She was the recipient of the William S. Frost and Maylinn Smith Award from the Margery Hunter Brown Indian Law Clinic and the Fran Elge Award from the Women’s Law Section of the Montana State Bar. She began clerking for the Honorable Mike McGrath, Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court, in August 2021.
In 2020, Michelle Runyan accepted a full-time faculty position teaching in the Communications Department at Klamath Community College in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Dayna Patterson’s poetry collection If Mother Braids a Waterfall was published by Signature Books in 2020 and won the Association for Mormon Letters Poetry Prize. Her second book, O Lady, Speak Again, which began as her MFA thesis at Western, will be published by Signature Books in 2023. In addition, Dayna’s textile art appeared on the cover of the spring/summer 2021 issue of Sugar House Review.
Rose Engelfried was honored to be offered admission to the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Ph.D. program in Creative Writing and started there last fall.
Alyssa Quinn’s novel Habilis was accepted for publication by Dzanc Books and will be released in September.
