The first thing you see when looking at the poster is a gingerbread, literally, that I guess is supposed to signify a neutral gender before the labels are put on. The labels on the gingerbread represent different aspects of one’s sexuality. The brain symbolizes the person’s identity. One’s identity is so much more than their gender, and that is one of the reasons the brain is the symbol of identity. Another reason is that the person creates/builds their identity. The heart symbolizes who that person is attracted to. Someone who considers themselves straight can be attracted to both sexes; attraction doesn’t necessarily define your orientation. The dashed outline of the gingerbread represents the expression of the self. This usually includes how someone talks, dresses, acts, etc. Many people express themselves in their gender in “untraditional” ways, meaning dressing more masculine vs. feminine. The sex symbols clearly represent the sex of someone, whether that be male, female, intersex, etc. The purpose of this poster is to show that there are so many options when it comes to someone’s sexuality, orientation, identity, attraction, expression, and sex. This poster also shows that when it comes to human sexuality, it isn’t black and white. This poster also gives young people who are questioning or are unsure, more certainty that it can be okay not knowing. It is a lot more complex and confusing.
