The clock finally hit 6 o’clock. 6 o’clock meant work was over for mom and it was my time to get help with my reading. I grabbed my tattered book, ran down the hall and jumped onto the huge bed and squeezed right next to mom. Tonight, we would venture into new territory: Junie B. Jones. I was thrilled to finally start this series, all the older kids read these books and if I could too everyone would see how smart I was. Imagine me, sitting at my table group reading Junie B. Jones, everyone would be so impressed.
Mine and mom’s reading time went like this, I would bring my book into her room, I would start reading to her and she would help along the way with any big words I couldn’t quite get. This was like practice before the big game, being able to pull out my Junie B. Jones book during silent reading time. Mom was my coach and the book was my field. There was always a couple hard words but for the most part, I was really good at reading all on my own. I liked reading a lot, especially when me and mom did it together. I got to show mom something I shined at and we got to hang out while doing it. We didn’t get to do this as often as I would have wanted so I was thrilled whenever the opportunity arose. With Junie B. Jones in hand, tonight I was more excited than ever.
We began reading and it was going well, just like usual, until it wasn’t. All of the sudden it took a turn for the worst. So many words I didn’t recognize, popping up all at once. I was trying so hard, sounding them out, nothing was working. Mom was doing her best to help but she knew I wasn’t getting it. Then she said something I’ll never forget; “Marissa, I think it’s too hard. Maybe we should go with a different book?” I was devastated. Heartbroken. Defeated. I excelled at reading, this was my time to show mom what I could do, how smart I was, and I had failed. I sat there, sinking into the bed, staring into the face of my kryptonite: Junie B. Jones. At the moment, it seemed like my reading demise but it turned into a moment that ended up helping me a lot.
I ran out. I never wanted to read again. It wasn’t fair. Why couldn’t I wrap my brain around these words? Luckily mom followed me and wasn’t going to let me give up. She grabbed another, slightly easier book, knowing what I was actually capable of and sat down next to me. “Let’s give this one a chance, and we will work our way to Junie B. Jones in no time.” We made our reading time more regular and slowly but surely worked our way up. Word by word, book by book. It wasn’t as fast as I wanted but it happened.
A few weeks later I was ready. I marched into class that day, head held high. I waited patiently, darting my eyes down to my purple back pack ever so often. The clock hit 12 o’clock, “Alright we will begin silent reading time now” my teacher announced. I reached down, unzipped my back pack and pulled out Junie B. Jones.
I will not be able to dedicate enough time to the event because I am now working on a statement of purpose for the academy. Furthermore, even if I use sop writer online, I want to complete it before beginning a new things.
