Literacy works in strange ways, for some it brings out emotion and speaks to people making them feel happy, sad, scared, frustrated ect. For others it brings knowledge, wisdom, and a drive to learn more. We decided to show the very different experiences we have had with literature through our collage using contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. Which are represented by the placement, depth, color, and focus of the images. The contrast can be shown between the old and the new, the old motor of the car with the newly formed webs of a spider, it can also be seen in the black and white photos in the background of the colored motor in the center . Repetition can be shown between the spider web stringing the two very different understandings of literacy together. In Brannen’s narrative he is trying to get rid of all the webs to make the motor look like new where in Kennedy’s she was hoping the webs would be keeped alive through the spider in Charlotte’s Web. This is portrayed through the words to the left, the repetition of the words shows the different ideas that tie this project together. The alignment aspect can be shown with knowledge and wisdom is displayed on one side where emotion and attachment to the story is on the other. Finally proximity is found with the two images in the center of the college, the photos are clear, focused and catch you eye with their bright yet subtle colors. The spider web on the motor in the center shows that even though we all get something different out of reading it can still unite us and allow us to enjoy literacy and continue to unite people for centuries to come.
