Extension # A
Literacy Narrative Converted to Poem!
Carly Spradlin
The Help Literacy Narrative Poem
Rachel Ayres gave me this book,
it caused me to take a second look,
I realized how truly lucky I am,
Going to school and getting to live in Bellingham.
Gorgeous Arizona Spring break views,
with bright yellow hues,
reading about how other people live and have very terrible situations at their work,
contemplating how tough their lives are while I’m sitting poolside feeling like a jerk.
Despite the all of the guilt,
I realized what my parents had built,
they worked hard to give us the very best,
hoping someday we would realize we were very blessed.
The story truly opened my eyes,
life can’t always be rainbows and blue skies,
Some people are doing everything they can and just getting by,
just lend a hand and happiness may multiply.
Reflection-
I chose to change my literacy narrative into a poem. I chose a poem because I would rather write than say draw or paint, it is much easier for me. I did this because it allowed me to easily convey the message of my narrative in a shorter version. It reads quicker and easier, making people more inclined to read it. Also, as a poem the reader is able to decide what things mean more, and things are more up to interpretation to the reader rather than the narrative, which states things more directly. By converting the narrative into a poem it allowed me to attach more emotion and meaning to moments of the narrative in different ways than the essay. This medium allowed me to expand on the emotions in the narrative. The poem focuses on specific details and moments that help shape the narrative. Writing a poem was a way to attach more feeling and different descriptors to the narrative. In the narrative I tried to show emotion as well as in the poem but, in the poem it can be interpreted differently. The reader is able to understand the narrative but, in quite a different light than the essay.
I love the last stanza. Well done Carly.
Remember that you need to write a 200 word reflection on the piece. Please see the rubric for Extension Project A
I will not count this project as complete until you post the reflection.
You do not need to post an entirely new piece, simply “edit” this post, adding your reflection at the end.
Great reflection. Good job.
