I have been pleasantly surprised how well research has been going! We are using both a survey and short interviews to collect data. Our interviews consist of three short questions. We did that so we could get them done fast and conduct a larger amount of the interviews. Each day we each split up and conduct 10 random interviews. We have been going out to red square and other various places around campus to conduct these interviews. I was a bit nervous at first to get out and start asking people to participate but, people were eager to contribute and it made the interviews much easier. The first question we asked was, “what method do you use the most to communicate with people?”. For this question, most people answered as I expected. They said they mostly use snapchat or texting. What surprised me throughout our interviews the most was the answer we got for why they used that method. Some people said snapchat because it is less formal and they could easily delete people, or texting because not everyone around them has social media to use. These different reasons that came up I wasn’t expecting and made me re think some of my predictions. With the answers we are getting it would be interesting to change up our question a bit and see what else these findings can answer. With some of these interviews I think we could also ask if social media is making communication easier rather than ruining our communication skills.
Personally, I think our research is going quite well so far. We have done more interviews than expected and I think will get more done this week as well. Interviews are going better than expected but I am quite disappointed in the turnout of our survey. We posted it to the English 101 forum and have not received nearly as many responses as I had hoped. Despite the disappointment I think it can easily be fixed by posting on a few other platforms and sending it out to family and friends. I am excited to reflect on our data as a collective this week and see what conclusions we can make.
It’s interesting how people like snapchat because of its informality, and especially interesting that they like it because it’s easy to delete people when they don’t want to have contact with them. Social media keeps us in constant communication with others, but as your data shows, we think we have control over that communication via deleting someone.
This is all great stuff, keep digging!
