Field Narrative: So far, I’ve been able to play through about a third of the missions that I’m going to do for the Halo Combat Evolved Campaign. So far, the results have been interesting. As I have already played all of the Halo games (because I am a huge fan of the Halo universe), I decided at the start that I would have to take a different approach to playing this: I would have to play the game from the perspective of someone who has never heard of Halo or touched anything from the Halo universe. At the same time I would have to pay closer attention to the finer details of the game, such as dialogue, character interactions, etc. Halo CE is fascinating to talk about lore-wise because it was the first game, yet it played out like it already had an established backstory and lore. The storywriters throw you into the game with no idea of who you are, where you are, who you’re fighting and why. In fact, some of these questions that the player would have wouldn’t have been answered until many years later, when more games and novels would come out, explaining some of the lore.
Personal Update: To me, I feel like me and Perry are getting things done well. He’s focusing on one video game while I focus on the other, taking notes as we go along. I feel that the only real struggle right now is trying to find people who we can interview. While this is a research project that relies more on qualitative data than quantitative data, it would still help to have a good number of interview responses to back up our research. So moving forward, I want to pick up on the pace that I’m completing the missions at, and at the same time, find people who are willing to be interviewed for the purposes of this project. Other than that, I feel we’re right on course.
