I decided to analyze the visual rhetoric of the study abroad posters and displays across campus. It seems like western really wants us to go somewhere else instead of here, or they just want us to experience the world in a controlled, learning environment. With these posters, they strive to catch the viewers eye with their images so hopefully, they will read more and look more into it. For the first picture shown below, it is a display case located in the library. It is very visually pleasing and catches people attention. Most people are interesting in the world and traveling, so by them putting the earth on there as the biggest symbol, it gives the idea of the display right away. People usually read left to right, so the next thing they would see would be TRAVEL due to its location below the earth, and the big letters make it stand out. This is clever on their part because they make the most intriguing parts stand out, and the logistical parts are smaller and less important in the overall display. In the second picture that I have below is geared toward the more adventurous, nature-loving people. Also, its trying to appeal to the people who are tired of the generic classroom structure. The last poster that I have pictured below is for Pre-med students to get the experience that not everyone can get. It has images of people in scrubs to show that that can be you too! All of these posers and displays use advertising techniques to help them get people attention and show them that they can achieve this kind of experience by going to their websites and registering. One thing to notice is that none of the posters show the price of the program. This strategy is there because the price could drive people away from the poster before they even get an idea of what they could experience.
I like how you break down the perspective audience of piece of rhetoric. It is ironic how Western seems to be urging its students to get away from Western. You have a great analytical eye, and it is always refreshing to hear your ideas.
Good job! Keep up the good hard work.
