Hello! I’m Marissa Dube. I am a freshman, and this is my first quarter at Western Washington University. I plan to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher and minor in Spanish in hopes of teaching and traveling. While I really don’t see myself as a writer and I am not particularly fond of it, I wouldn’t say I’m too bad at it either. I think this makes me a unique writer because I can put my dislike of the subject aside and produce, what I think is, a pretty good piece of writing. My writing talents lie in the more informal forms of writing. I mostly enjoy writings such as emails and social media posts that are more casual and everyday occurrences. These come much more naturally to me because I write them when I have something on my mind that I want to get out. I know what I want to say and don’t have to think too hard about it. When writing for a class or a lengthier piece I tend to get excited about topics that pertain to life experiences and current events. I like and find it easiest to write about something I’ve been through, hope to experience or that matters in the world right now.
My biggest takeaway from this class was all the different styles we were exposed to and wrote. From emails, to a poster, to a narrative they can all benefit me in numerous ways. I really appreciated learning different kinds of writing and different writing technology’s that will be beneficial not only in my classes but in the real world as well. The web text is probably my biggest challenge. The whole thing is very new to me and fairly hard to navigate. Luckily my partner is much better at using word press than me and is being very helpful. We set out to design our web text in way that flows very easily from one section to the other and has a simple, yet captivating design. This will help for readers to view our research just as how we were conducting it. We wanted our web text to be uniform, so we utilized the repetition from the CRAP method. Repetition is used in the design of our pages. All the pages look very similar and have the same formatting to show that they are all equally important and go together. Alignment and proximity are utilized on our pictures and graphs that we inserted. We made sure to align them in a way that would not distract from the words but also enhance the content. On our findings page alignment and proximity is heavily used to show what graphs complement each other and so graphs can be viewed in an order that builds off each other. The overall goal for the design of our web text is it to be viewed in a progressive order and for it to be easy to navigate.
