For our project, we compiled a picture collage to represent our literary sponsors. After reading each others’ papers, we quickly realized that our experiences were in no way related, which was a problem. Sophie’s story was influenced by the moment she found her grandparents’ wedding book. The love her grandparents experienced was portrayed through a handwritten note her grandfather wrote about meeting her grandmother in the book. This literacy narrative was inspirational and happy. Ashley’s story on the other hand was about failure in 7th grade english class. She talked about the struggle with having to fit into the advanced class when she had no previous experience with the advanced content. She failed a lot of her first assignments because her sixth grade class didn’t prepare her well enough. With these differences, we didn’t know how to effectively create a collage that showed the similarities and differences in a clever way, but we made it work! In our collage, we have the background as the actual old, white dresser where Sophie found her grandparents’ wedding book. Also, relating to her story, she has the actual wedding book sitting on top of the dresser and a bright red coat placed on the right side to represent the coat her grandfather describes her grandmother wearing in her story. In the mirror on top of the dresser, you will see a sad face in it. This represents Ashley’s failure at the beginning of her story. There is also repetitive words of failure to show her inner thoughts and how she wanted to quit. For contrast, we put a black and white filter on the background while all of the elements of our literacy stories remain in color, such as the bright red coat that stands out. For repetition, the callout bubbles around Ashley’s reflection in the mirror are repeated multiple times to show the effect the negativity had on Ashley. For alignment, we have the dresser aligned approximately in the center to show its importance and the other characteristics placed in conjunction with this center alignment, not randomly throughout the collage. Finally for Proximity, the wedding book appears to be farther away on the shelf due to its size, the red coat appears in the background of the room, and the callouts are placed in close proximity to the frowning face.
