I have recently started volunteering with a Whatcom Humane Society Program called Dog Day Reading Afternoons where dogs and their handlers go to libraries or schools and kids who are struggling with reading read aloud to the dogs. I am handler for a dog named Kiwi, a super sweet golden retriever who loves all the attention she gets!
Not only is this super fun for the kids (and of course Kiwi) but studies have shown reading to dogs is really good for kids. According to Scottish Book Trust reading to dogs is good for you because:
- Dogs are non-judgemental so children are less self-conscious
- Most children have a natural affinity and bond with dogs
- Children are allowed to improve their reading skills in a fun relaxed atmosphere
- Results show that it decreases stress over reading aloud in class
- It can enhance self-esteem, motivate speech and build confidence
And I agree. It has been really cool watching kids who we have been told struggle with reading get excited to read their favorite books and show the pictures to Kiwi. And they didn’t seem embarrassed or stressed at all. In fact they were having the time of their lives!
For a dog to be a part of the program they have to be very good tempered and be okay lying down for long periods at a time. Before being accepted Kiwi had to go through a test where she had to lie down next to kids for long periods of time, see if loud noises distracted her, and she was hugged a little to tightly and have her tail pulled a little. Kiwi being the sweetheart that she is passed with flying colors!
It has been such a good experience being part of this program and I am excited to keep continuing with it! If anyone is interested in volunteering they can always talk to me to find out more. They are hoping to expand to even more libraries and schools!
This is so great! You are Kiwi make a perfect duo.
