Why I write
Writing is essential to my life because it’s a mode of expression. It’s an organization of thoughts. A form of self care. For me, I write when I have things to say but I’m not quite sure who I should say it to. Writing is a form of art that is manifested into my everyday life, whether it be journaling, texting, or to do lists. I also appreciate and thoroughly enjoy analytical writing, but it’s a little less practical for casual writing. Without my literacy, I wouldn’t be who I am today. My literacy allows me to accurately express myself at any time I feel appropriate, and in ways that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Writing is authentic, it is honest, and it’s all mine.
A little about me
My full name is Rebecca Rivers Marx, named after my aunt that I love dearly. I love my middle name because it reminds me of home: wild and free-flowing. I’m from the small town of Juneau, Alaska, so although Bellingham is definitely a transition, it’s familiar enough that I don’t feel too out of place. I’ve fallen in love with Bham since I’ve gotten here. This place has all of my favorite things- the trees, mountains, ocean, and any outdoor activity that I could dream of doing- just like home (but maybe a little bigger.) This is why I feel that Western is the perfect school for me. Not only does it have the most breathtaking location, but also an exceptional psychology program. As of now, I’m planning on majoring in behavioral neuroscience because of my love of psychology, biology, and chemistry.
My Webtext
My partner Kennedy and I decided to conduct our research on why there are less women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields at WWU, and how feminism can aide this. Our design process was fairly thought through for our website, as everything was done with a purpose. When designing pages, I made sure to italicize and enlarge important quotes and ideas in order to follow CRAP tactics and accessibility guidelines. We also included images on nearly every page so that the viewer could get an idea of what the page was about without actually having to read all of it. Creating this webpage was my favorite assignment in this class, because I had the freedom to express the research that I collected in any form that I wanted. It was truly in our own hands to be as creative as we wanted with it, which I value greatly. A link to our webtext is below, and I hope you enjoy exploring it as much as we did creating it!
