During this project we hoped to find various connections between how people viewed smartphones and age group. To do this we interviewed people of all ages. We also were attempting to discover how these people viewed their communities and how these technological advancements affected togetherness in our society. Before we conducted our research, we expected that the older generations would not see smartphones as a big necessity, and younger generations to be more dependent on their phones. This turned out to be true according to our data. We have found that older people above the age of 50 believe that the introduction of smartphones has not helped our overall communication as a society. When looking at younger generations however, the overwhelming opinion is that smartphones have helped our connection with the world and our communities. We’ve discovered that as people grow up with smartphones, they become more of a necessity. The social experiment that we conducted, while unrelated to age, still provides us with a good idea of exactly how much smartphones have changed communication. if 48% of people on campus are on their phones, 48% on campus aren’t interacting with others or even presenting themselves for an interaction. The data that we have collected strongly supports our initial hypothesis, smartphones are more important to young people, and older folks aren’t as fond of smartphones.
