Our research question was “Is there any correlation between someone’s favorite genre and their personality?” and the answer to our question is yes, there is a correlation. There might not be a large correlation but there is one. Out of all the genres people could pick from our survey, the most popular were historical, drama, comedy, fantasy, thriller/horror, and mystery. One of the questions we put on our survey was if they could tell us there favorite book, movie, or TV show and our top three answers were the harry potter series, the umbrella academy, and the game of thrones series. For the personality questions, we decided to use two different personality platforms that are accurate and well known; Meyers Briggs and the Big Five. We found out that the most common personality trait that we found were Advocate (INFJ) which is someone who is quiet and mystical, yet very inspiring and tireless idealists, Mediator (INFP) which is someone who is poetic, kind, and an altruistic person, and always eager to help a good cause, and Protagonist (ENFJ) which is someone who is a charismatic and an inspiring leader, who is able to mesmerize their listeners. Then, for the Big Five personality test, the most common personality traits were Agreeableness which is someone who cares about others, feels empathy and concern for others, and enjoys helping others, Openness which is someone who very creative and open to trying new things, and Conscientiousness which is someone who spends time preparing, finishes things quickly, and likes having a set schedule.
The most important data we found was that people who have a more open personality tend to like the genres fantasy and thriller/horror more than any others. Also, people who have a more agreeable personality tend to like mystery, comedy, and drama more. This also answers our question because people who tend to have a more open personality will receive horror and other intense media better than people who are conscientiousness who tend to like romantic literature more.
This is the graph we created as a way to show our findings. At the top, there are all the genres we decided to choose and put them in our survey, and at the bottom are the different Meyers Briggs personality traits. As you can see, the most popular traits are INFJ, INFP, and ENFJ.
