1st Grade: Literature for Sleep

Nonfiction Book

TitleWe All Sleep

Author: D.J Panec

Publication Date: June 1, 2009

Publisher: Treasure Bay, Inc.

Description:

We All Sleep by D.J Panec is a book that informs us that animals are just like humans when it comes to sleep, we all do it. This is a great way to get students in your classroom to start thinking about sleep and why it is something that even animals do. We All Sleep is the best selection because it is easily relatable and this book could be integrated into other subjects. For example, I would integrate this book into a science lesson if there were to be a lesson on animals and their sleep cycles or even a lesson on the outdoors.

Excerpt:

“These pigs are so dirty and really a sight! I just hope they bathe before bedtime tonight! Do you think he washed there, in back of his ear? They’re sleeping right now, so let’s not get too near.” Pg.8

NHES 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health

  • Core Integration:
    • I could use this book in a science lesson about animals because this book talks about how everyone needs sleep even animals. After a science lesson looking at animals you could read this story to the students and move into talking about the topic of sleep and ask the children what similarities they noticed between the lesson and the book.
    • After reading the book I would have a class discussion about sleep. I would start by talking about why we need sleep. Then have the children list on chart paper key reasons why children need sleep. For example: for energy to learn and play; to help heal cuts and bruises and get better if they are sick and to help their bodies grow.

Title:  Dr. Seuss Sleep Book

Author: Dr. Seuss

Description:

Dr. Suess’s Sleep Book is about a bug named Van Vleck who has a yawn that spreads to many other bugs. This book follows the bugs as they are sleeping or getting ready for bed. This book also talks about alarm clocks, sleepwalking and snoring. This book could be incorporated into a lesson about the importance of sleep and also talking about the things that may happen when we sleep such as sleepwalking and snoring. Also could be incorporated into a lesson about why we yawn.

Excerpt:

“The yawn of that one little bug is still spreading! According to latest reports, it is heading across the wide fields, through the sleepy night air, across the whole country toward every which where” (read page 3).

NHES:

NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

NHES 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

Core Integration:

    • To integrate this into a lesson I would do so during a health lesson where we talk about how to keep our bodies healthy and take care of ourselves. This book also talks about yawning, snoring and sleepwalking which would all be great discussion topics during a health lesson.
    • An activity I could do after reading the book is introduce students to what a sleep log is. I would show them how to record the number of hours they slept each night including what time the went to bed and what time they woke up. This would be a take-home activity but I would introduce it in class and talk to the students about how many hours of sleep a night they should get. I would also have students record any unusual sleep habits such as sleepwalking or sleep talking etc.  After students complete their log they could bring it back into class and write goals for themselves on how to improve their sleep habits and better their health.

Health Standards:

NHES 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

NHES 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
