Description

This video was made by TELUS Optik it is not suitable for grades k-4 because of the demand the content places on the viewer, but is an excellent resource for upper elementary to middle school students. You can tell that the movie has been made recently by the production value, especially compared to the many other dated documentaries available on the subject. We find this important because students may lose interest if they can tell that the video is too dated.  I like this documentary because there are multiple instances where the video provides a timeline for historical context, and it also provides the viewer with lots of important and interesting content. Most other documentaries on this subject are focused how to get physical activity, and we think it is more important to focus on why it is important to exercise. This video will help increase motivation, rather than show students how to do something they have little motivation to do.

Review

One of my favorite things about this video is the emphasis it places on teaching students to be physically literate, meaning that they understand physical fitness, and why it is important.  I would likely leave off the last 15 minutes or so of the documentary because I found it less rich in content and it would avoid the bleeped out swear word. Many of the people interviewed for this documentary are standouts in their respective fields and

Core integration:

One way that this documentary can be aligned with the core curriculum is through a writing lesson working on collecting important information from a source in order to use it to present the knowledge that has been gained. This video has lots of important content that students can use to synthesize in their own writing and presentation of the subject. This video can act as jumping off point for a research project answering the question “why is physical education and activity important”? Students will be asked to watch the video and gather information about the importance of physical education and activity, we will come together as a class to discuss what the features of a strong and weak resource are. Students will then independently find one additional research resource, and then come together in groups of four to make a presentation on their findings on the importance of physical education and activity.

Runtime: 1 hour and 38-minute

Released by: Disney and Pixar

Release date: June 2008

Runtime: 1 hour and 38-minute

Rating: G

Description:

Wall-E is a movie about humans abandoning the earth due to pollution leaving cleaning robots to clean the waste while humans enjoy their luxurious trip in space cruise. During their stay in the space cruise, although they had many gears and places for physical activities, they did not move instead lived in mobile chair that does not require any physical activities. This caused them to be unhealthy.

Review:

This film shows the importance of physical activities and does so in a relatable way because it seems like the dystopian future featured in this movie is not that much of a reach from where we are heading currently as a society. This is because the residents of the space cruise were inactive they became so unhealthy. This caused them to have difficulty navigating around the world.

Core Integration:

This video can spur on a class discussion about the importance of exercise, and then it can be connected to our core curriculum in science where we are working on collecting scientific data and synthesizing it into easily digestible charts or graphs.

Students can be given a chart like this:

And asked to track their exercise time and relate it took how much time they spent watching T.V. Students then can talk about energy and how it relates to eating and exercise (calorie intake vs calorie usage).

Standards:

NHES 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

PHW 7.2.1: Demonstrate healthy practices and behaviors to maintain or improve personal health.

HBO 1: Engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least sixty minutes every day

 Core Content Standards:

4-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and their uses affect the environment.

4-ESS3-1 discusses natural resources and fuels. This can relate to our topic by considering energy that could be derived from physical activities. Students can think of an invention that could provide electricity using physical energy.
