Bullying Prevention, Grade 6, Non-Fiction Literature

Positive: A Memoir

“I was beginning to realize that sometimes a person doesn’t get to choose whether she joins or fights. Sometimes the joining is impossible, sometimes the fight chooses you. The universe plucks you- you, specifically- out of all those souls out there and hands you something that makes fitting in and going with the flow utterly out of the question.” (8)

Author: Paige Rawl with Ali Benjamin
Publication Date: August26, 2014,
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

This is an autobiography of Paige when she was a middle school student dealing with being an outsider that ultimately got bullied for being different. What makes her so unique is she was born with HIV and therefore must deal with the daily struggles of having an incurable disease. The story is heartbreaking and heartwarming as you read about her life and how living through something that should have killed her at a young age gives her a much better outlook on life than many middle schoolers would have. I once again chose this book because the character is the age of the students who would be reading it, and that it has appropriate language. I also liked that she really has a positive attitude and insight which I think is something middle schoolers need to see more of. Many students are also learning about HIV and AIDS at this age in Health or Science classes, so that can also be included with the lessons on bullying.

Core Integration:

This book would be an option in a Language Arts unit around biographies and autobiographies. Given that Paige is the age in the story that the students who are reading this book are, I think it would appeal to many of them. The student would be required to make a timeline of her story and give supporting details using the text. They could also analyze how her vocabulary and the way she writes contributes to the telling of her personal life story.
