There were also some articles on how to prepare food appropriately. All articles are presented in a kid-friendly way and are easy to understand. Students can explore the links on this website and discuss what they learned with their classmates. This was the best site because it provided an easy outlet for students to research food safety on their own within one site. Students can access various subtopics about food safety all in one place and gain a comprehensive understanding of how to care for ones body by using food safety. Other sites may only provide one look into a food safety subtopic and would require students to browse multiple websites to find the information they need. However, with Kids Health, all of this information can be found in one simple location.

Core Integration:

This connects to science easily as it applies to how bacteria grows. Students could learn about food safety from a lesson incorporated into a unit on microorganisms and how those grow and repopulate. This could be incorporated into the classroom with a research project on the impact of germs on food safety. Students could start by researching food safety on Kids Health with a provided worksheet. This worksheet could target specific concepts the students should be able to find while searching through the website, such as types of food poisoning and their causes, ways to prevent the spread of germs in food, how to protect oneself from these germs, and how to properly cook food. The Nutrition website in the link above is a great resource for teachers. It has links to classroom activities, games, comic stories, take home parent child workbooks, and more! This is a .gov site so it is safe to use and official to the government. The links that it provides go to other helpful government sites such as the CDC website, FDA, the food safety bog that we found for parents, and more! Although this website does not provide ready made lesson plans for teachers, it does provide the tools and activities that will make up a lesson plan so it is a great resource for any grade level!

Core integration:

Using the information from the website, a teacher could incorporate food safety into a lesson on bacteria and other microorganisms. The teacher could create a worksheet for students to fill out while researching food safety on their own, kid friendly website that targets the main points on both websites. This website in particular provides various games and activities could be used alongside or after the research lesson to enhance learning and engage students. One game in particular that may help students is the “Food Safety Game”. This game is great for learning how to handle food. Stories the could be incorporated into the lesson are also provided such as one called “How Dad Got Sick”. With this story, children could explore the impacts of foodborne illness and why we must be careful about what we eat. A science lesson that delves deeper into the impact of germs and what they are could be developed using the following NGS and NHES standards. Students would learn about bacteria in general as well as how bacteria can affect the food we eat.

In my search for a parent friendly educational website, I discovered the Food Safety Blog which contained lots of family friendly tips on lunch packing and keeping food safety in mind. Since this is a blog, parents are able to go back and find posts from any time, they are easily able to reference and learn from present and past posts at any time!This blog also offers other posts about different topics, not just about food safety! They offer other categories such as allergies, illness, kitchen safety, labels, baby and pregnancy, and so much more! This site is a great resource, it is a .gov site so it is credible and safe to use and trust. Not only is this a safe and secure site, it is completely family friendly.The one thing that drew me to this site over others, is the user friendly interface. It has quick blurbs about different food safety related topics so parents are not reading a novel or wasting their precious time! I also loved that it covered similar topics like kitchen safety, baby and pregnancy, and so much more. I liked this site for parents because it was a place for diverse knowledge and it was a credible place to go looking for information.
