It sounds like you are thinking about all of the bad things and not the good things that are possible.” Barnaby gets Danny to jump and dance around, making Danny feel better. Barnaby shows Danny his “Feel-Good Rules” to remember when he’s feeling down. His rules were, “Think about the GOOD things instead of focusing on just the BAD things,” “Think about what you CAN do and not what you CAN’T do,” “Dance even when you don’t want to dance. MOVING MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER,” and “Think GOOD things about yourself, even if it feels easier to think bad things.” Danny began to feel better and continued to dance, showing his other friends how to dance like him. When his “blue cloud started to feel heavy and dark” Danny practiced the things barnaby told him to do, which made his blue cloud change color. The cloud became lighter and brighter. The oil who was in charge of the Grand Forest Parade named Danny as the Official Forest Dance Instructor and Grand Marshal of the Forest Parade because of his amazing dance moves. Danny looked up at his cloud and saw that it had become a rainbow full of beautiful colors and that Barnaby’s Feel-Good Rules had worked!

Overall, I think the story is nice, entertaining and fun to read and it provides helpful strategies for kids.

What do you do to make yourself more happy?”. We will stop 2-3 times within the story to clarify for the students, answer any questions students may have, and to point out key details. After reading the book aloud to the students, we will then ask questions to prompt for understanding of the main message or lesson of the book. For example, we will ask questions like, “How did Danny feel throughout the book? How was the way Danny felt at the beginning different from how he felt at the end? What did Barnaby do to help Danny? How could you use Danny’s story to help you when you or a friend is sad?”. The students’ answers to these questions should be enough to know if they understood about what depression looks like and how we can help ourselves and others, but we would follow up with the students making their own personal list of things they can do to help themselves or a friend when they’re feeling down.

This is different from other books that briefly talked about environmental factors such as major life events. I especially appreciated how it gave specific intervention strategies on how you can support students with depression, instead of just listing broad categories such as create an inviting classroom it would actually list ways to support students and then would go into each strategy in greater depth. This book also lets teachers know that we cannot diagnose students but it talks about how we can be helpful in this process such as keeping records of student observations. These can later be useful to school counselors and school psychologists.
