Integrated Media Resource – Documentary

Topic: Food Allergies

Grade Level: 3 – 5

Title: Rotten

Producer: Netflix

Year: 2018

Length: 1 season – 6 episodes

Rating: TV – MA – Due to the rating of TV – MA all parents would be notified prior to this film being shown in class. All parents would be required to sign a permission slip for their student to view this film. In the event that a parent does not wish for their student to view this film an alternative classroom and assignment would be provided for those students.

This documentary was chosen because it highlights how the food industry is making fake natural products or fabricating a natural food product. This can be a huge issue for someone with food allergies because a person with food allergies needs to know exactly what is in the food they are consuming. Only the first episode of the documentary was viewed for this assignment. Based off the first episode I believe the contents of this documentary is age appropriate for 5th graders to view and analyze. In the first episode of Rotten the narrator talks about how honey bees are dying off at an alarming rate, but how honey consumption is on the rise. The documentary goes into speculations about why the bees are dying and what is being done to increase honey production to meet the rising demand.

This video clip is not the best representation of the Honey Bee Episode of Rotten. Unfortunately I was not able to find a specific short clip of the Honey Bee episode. I would not be showing 5th graders the episodes containing dead fish or chickens. The only episode from this documentary that would be shown in class is the episode about honey bees – episode 1.
