Integrated Media Resource – Popular Film

Topic: Food Allergies

Grades 3 – 5

The best example of food allergies in popular film is from the movie Hitch. Hitch was released in 2005 and was produced by James Lassiter, Wink Mordaunt, Will Smith, Teddy Zee, and Michael Tadross. Hitch is rated PG-13 and is 1 hour and 58 minutes long. Due to the rating of PG-13 all parents would be notified prior to this film being shown in class. All parents would be required to sign a permission slip for their student to view this film. In the event that a parent does not wish for their student to view this film an alternative classroom and assignment would be provided for those students.

Hitch is a romantic-comedy which follows Alex “Hitch” Hitchens as he attempts to help seemingly awkward men land their dream girls. Along the way the usually smooth Hitch meets Sara and, in his attempts to secure her affections, becomes just as awkward as his clients. Journalist Sara meanwhile is keen to discover the identity of the man who keeps setting up these unorthodox romantic pairings after she mistakenly blames the person responsible for the sadness of a friend. Hitch is the best selection to show a food allergy in popular film because it shows how food allergies can happen to unsuspecting people and how urgent of a problem they can be, albeit in a humorous way. Other films use food allergies as a way of harming the person with the allergy (Antitrust, Peter Rabbit) but Hitch shows the impact an allergy can have without an evil intent.

A way to integrate Hitch into my teaching would be to use it as a resource when talking about the importance of healthy food choices. In the film, Hitch tries shellfish for the first time and has an allergic reaction. In my class I could use this to talk about individualization of diet, that for most people shellfish would be a healthy food choice, but not for Hitch. Another example could be that almond butter is a good protein choice, but not if you’re allergic to nuts!

Core Integration:

I could use a worksheet (such as https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Nutritional-Health-Worksheets-Whats-On-My-Plate-528290) to ask the kids to compose a safe, healthy meal while avoiding certain allergens. This would use math concepts and problem solving.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.D.8

Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.B.3

Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
