  • Reason for Choosing this Site:
    • First and foremost, NetAddiction was founded in 1995 by Dr. Kimberly Young who is a licensed psychologist. She also founded The Center for Internet Addiction and was the first to identify Internet Addiction. Her work was featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The London Times, USA Today, CNN, CBS News, Times, Fox News, etc. Furthermore, Dr. Kimberly Young also founded the first US-based inpatient hospital clinic of Internet Addiction at the Bradford Regional Medical Center. She developed some parenting guidelines for parents who have child with Internet Addiction and they are age specific as well.
    • I believe this website is the best for students because it’s straightforward, it’s simple, interactive, and best of all it does not require the use of a computer.  I or any other teacher can print out the Internet Addiction Test for our students, which is a checklist that is provided by NetAddiction which asks students to list their “internet usage” from 0-5. The total score at the end helps determine how healthy a student is being and using the internet. This can be done at school or even at home. I believe it would make most sense to do this towards the end of the school day or after using computers for assignments/projects.
  • Core Integration:
    • I will integrate this topic during my math class. I plan on spending a day or two discussing about Internet Addiction; integrating the topic into the math curriculum. I will have students complete a series of worksheets regarding how much time they spend on the internet. The first worksheet would focus on figuring out the time that particular student spends on the internet on a daily basis. The following worksheet focuses on calculating the percentage of time they should using the internet. Lastly, I will have my students calculate the percentage of time it would take for a student to be considered addicted to the internet.
    • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3.C: Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

    • I believe this is a reliable site because the company is parented by Acadia Healthcare, a multinational behavioral healthcare provider. While there are many types of addictions discussed on this website, two pages on this website are dedicated to internet and gaming addictions among adolescents (Young Adults Have Internet and Gaming Addictions, Too and Teenage Internet Addiction).
    • I think that this is the best source about internet addiction that we found for teachers because it provides teachers with a great deal of information about internet addiction. This website offers information on the symptoms that adolescents who are addicted to the internet may show, the causes of internet addiction, and available treatments for internet-addicted adolescents. In addition to the information that it provides for teachers about internet addiction, the website also has a list of questions that help students analyze their internet usage to decide if they are using the internet in an unhealthy way (Young Adults Have Internet and Gaming Addictions, Too).
  • Core Integration:
      • I would integrate this website into a general curriculum topic by having students complete an English Language Arts worksheet that requires them to use computers to look at information on the internet about internet addiction. The worksheet could include space for three facts, three opinions, and three educated statements. I could provide this website for students to find three facts about internet addiction. In addition, I could find one website that has opinions about internet addiction and one website that has educated statements about internet addiction.
      • I would then extend this worksheet activity by having students share the nine statements that they found and discuss a list of discussion questions with their classmates. These discussion questions could include having them brainstorm about activities to do instead of spending time on the internet, asking them why it is important to take breaks from being on the internet, asking them why they should be in charge of their own healthy behaviors, and having them describe some of the negative influences around them that promote prolonged internet usage.

  • Reason for Choosing this Site:
    • Based on my research, this is the best educational website about Internet addiction for parents because the information is very reliable as it was founded by a leading expert in the field and it provides a wide variety of resources for parents to diagnose and treat their Internet-addicted children. Dr. Kimberly Young is a psychologist and an internationally acclaimed expert on internet addiction. Dr. Young has been studying internet addiction since 1995, and since then she has published numerous articles and books, founded the first US inpatient hospital clinic, created the first developmentally appropriate parenting guidelines for screen usage, been a keynote speaker, and is on the editorial board of multiple journals. If I were a parent who was trying to diagnose or treat my internet addicted child, I would like to be getting my resources from one of the best in the field. There are also a wide variety of resources on this website for parents to use. Parents could help identify if their child has a screen addition by taking the Parent-Child Internet Addiction Test (PCIAT). After taking this test, parents can receive one-on-one counseling with Dr. Young to receive guidance on how to manage their child’s screen time. Dr. Young also has developmentally-appropriate screen smart guidelines and other informational articles so that parents can learn more about internet addiction.
  • Integration:
    • I would introduce this resource to parents just before their children take the Internet Addiction Test in school in order to help parents learn the information before they discuss it with their children. I would send an email to parents and discuss the importance of healthy internet usage and let parents know that their children will be evaluating their own internet usage this week. I would encourage parents to discuss with their child’s test results with them and to work together to develop healthy internet usage goals.
