Methodology
I conducted a visual semiotic analysis of the top 10 videos that use the song “Mia Khalifa”.
In the domain I skipped videos that only featured an animal and didn’t feature a person at all. This included DIY, art, and video game videos (especially Minecraft and Fortnite), which are all popular on TikTok. A more in depth analysis would include these videos, however, for the sake of my project, I only looked at TikTok videos with people in them, even if briefly.
First, I analyzed the denotations in the video–the images as they were. Then, based off of those images, looked for the connotations in our culture to reveal implicit meaning. From my denotations and connotations, I then categorized the user what social identity their signs most associated with.
