Guest Speaker Tie-In:

A lot of schools are beginning to implement the Intervention Prevention Specialists in their schools, these specialists are usually present in the high schools as a resource for students who are at risk or using drugs or currently using. Since this lesson is about the fast spreading of information over social media, the IPS can talk to students about the risks that students are exposed to that can lead to the use and abuse of substances. For 4th-8th grade students, this would be a good message to hear because just seeing as they are not yet in high school does not mean that they aren’t exposed to the same risk factors as high school students. This speaker will be able to share the steps to treatment and open the door to resources to help students who are currently struggling or on the road to struggling with addiction or tobacco use. The IPS can start an open class discussion on the public issue of drug use and how it affects the school system, and even outside in the community.
