Internet Sources for Parents, Students, and Teachers: Sexual Health Education

For Parents

Talking to Kids about Sex and Sexuality” from Planned Parenthood

This extensive article is a guide for parents on how to talk to their children about sexual health topics including starting the conversation, making conversations more comfortable, answering questions about sex and sexuality, and more. This site is particularly good because it focuses on answering students’ questions in the home which is something that parents are often uncomfortable with regarding sex and sexuality. The article has lots of subheadings that the user can skip to if they are only interested in a particular subject, and there are links on the side to related articles that will also be useful to parents such as “Puberty 101 for Parents” and “Keeping Teens Healthy by Setting Boundaries.”

For Students

The Sexual Health Guide on Kidshealth.org

This website is a miniature encyclopedia dedicated to sexual health topics for teens. There are sections for girls, guys, stis, birth control, and puberty, all of which contain numerous resources and articles. If a teen has a question, chances are they can find the answer here. Especially nice is that this guide includes questions that teens may not be comfortable asking others like questions about wet dreams and menstruation. In class, I would use this as a resource to direct my students to if they have a question they aren’t comfortable asking in class, even anonymously.
