Fire station tours can be scheduled online, and take about a half an hour. Students will be able to see the Fire Station, looking at where the fire fighters sleep and the call center. They will be able to see all the gear that is used, and there will be a demonstration of how long it takes for the fire fighters to gear up after a call. The students will also be able to explore the Fire Engine. There are other resources available through calling the fire station’s number, however. A member can also be available to come to the classroom to read a book about fire safety to the children.
How to use this resource
This is a great resource for understanding what Fire Fighters do, and how they protect us from fires. This would be great as a social studies unit, to understand different jobs in the community. This would be a good wrap- up to a fire safety unit, to be able to see real life fire fighters, and interact with them, using all the students’ new knowledge. It would also be a great beginning to a fire unit, because it will start the excitement about Fire Safety that will last through the rest of the unit.
