Some of the many topics covered in this book are; how food helps you grow, how food is preserved, minerals, vitamins, fats, carbs, proteins and food allergies. There is so much useful information in this book and you could use it in your classroom in a variety of ways. I felt like even I could learn from this book because it discussed topics that I have never learned about. Many of the topics are very applicable to real life, like the section on the pros and cons of cooking foods.
This book is a quality resource for the classroom because it contains a large variety of information and is laid out in a kid-friendly, easy to read format. The colorful pictures and diagrams enrich the reading experience and make the text easier to understand. There are even little quizzes that can be found throughout the book with the answer key in the back. This book is also formatted in a way that has one topic per two page spread. Excerpt:
“Food is essential to every human- without it we simply couldn’t survive. But it’s important to stop and ask: How much is enough? Food gives you all the energy and nutrients you need to grow and stay healthy, but too much food, particularly the wrong food, can be a bad thing. So watch what you eat, choose wisely, and live well” (page 67).
Lesson:
This book could be used as a history and writing project. On pages 10-17, there is a food timeline that contains important dates of when certain foods were created, when different food preparation processes were invented, and when different technologies related to food and food preparation were made. For this lesson, students will be asked to choose one event from the timeline and research it. Once they have completed their research, they will be asked to write a short reflection on what they found. In this reflection, they should explain why this discovery or creation is important to the food we eat now, and include various facts and quotes that they found through their research. Once all of the students have finished writing their short research paper, they will be asked to present what they found to the class. This lesson is teaching history, working on the students’ research skills, strengthening their writing skills, and using their presentation skills.
