Description:
This video discusses the research behind how bullying affects the brain of bullies, victims, and bystanders. It talks about how the damage caused to the brain as a result to this behavior can have lasting affects for the rest of a person’s life. Specific affects are discussed and suggestions for how to get help are also mentioned.
Lesson:
I would integrate this video into a science unit about the function of the brain. Earlier in the unit, time would have been spent studying how different organisms respond to their environment as they grow. In this lesson, students would be asked study the cause and affects of bullying on the brain. I would also have them draw on other resources such as this article titled Bullying and the Brain from http://www.brainfacts.org. They would be asked to create a hypothesis which states how bullying affects the brain and back it using evidence from multiple sources.
Standards:

NHES Standard 7 Grade 5 objective: Describe ways stress affects the mind, body, and relationships.
NGSS 4-LS1-: Structure and Function: Plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction.
