Documentary – A is for Autism

Released in 1992. 11 min. Director: Tim Webb. Short TV documentary. No rating listed

A documentary about the experiences of children growing up with Autism brought through the use of pictures that they drew.

 A is for Autism

I would use this documentary as a way to teach my students that many things can cause people to feel frustrated and overwhelmed and that you shouldn’t make fun of people due to how they act.

First I would have students draw a picture of something that causes them frustration and then on the back write it out and then also write out what they can do to feel less frustrated in those situations. This gets the regular general education students to consider that sometimes other students face their own frustrations near 24/7 and have to do certain things in order to relieve their inner battles.

This also is a great introduction into an anti bullying activity because it talks about how different people act in different ways and sometimes they can’t control it.
