What is the purpose of this App?

This app seems like a great resource to have on tablets in the classroom. It was not created to discourage teenagers from using social media, but rather to have teens learn about staying safe online when using social media. I think this says a lot especially to teens because teenagers often don’t like to be told what to do or prohibited from doing certain things. Social media is one of those things that parents and/or other adults spend time discouraging their kids from using rather than teaching about it.

What does the App offer?

Teenagers will feel more supported and trusted by their parents and/or guardians if they are given the tools to be successful. This app is free and easy to use. It has different sections for users to explore. The sections range from general tips to what to do when a stranger tries to contact you. It provides examples, links to videos, as well as other resources embedded into the app. The last section of the app is a “quiz function” which is 10 questions to see what the user learned from exploring and reading through the application features. If answered correctly you move on, if answered incorrectly it provides you the answer to and you can retake the quiz.

How to integrated this app into the classroom:

I would have student use this application on a tablet if we had “extra time” or if they were to finish their work early. It is good because it can be used for as little as 10 minutes and go up to about a 30-minute period depending on the student and/or task. I think in this day in age most teenagers have a phone. Therefore, this could also be a take-home assignment where students are to explore the app, take the quiz, and then write down something interesting they learned or a question that arose from exploring the app and then talk about these ideas in class the next day.
