Internet Resources for Kindergarten Parents and Teachers Regarding Sleep

Internet Source for Teachers:

I explored Kids Health a bit and found some information about sleep that would be useful for teachers. Click on this link and it will take you to the teacher guide. I also included links that you can click that is a quiz, answer key, handout and a poster.

This website seems to have a lot of other information on different topics that would be useful as a teacher to know. I included a link to the teacher guide to teaching the importance of sleep, a quiz, handout, and poster to hang in the classroom. The teacher guide also includes the quiz, answer key, and handout but, I wanted to give them their own links. The teacher guide includes a couple mini lessons along with MANY other resources a teacher can look at if he/she are struggling to teach the subject. The other links will take you to places around this website to makes sure you are getting a reliable source.

What makes this the BEST website is because it includes so many more topics than just sleep. I already talked a bit about why I chose it but, it is simple to get around and informational. The lessons seem easy to teach and they seem to get the point across to students quickly and effectively. I would use this site for teaching about sleep education and other topics.

Learning Objectives:
Students should understand and know why kids should get between 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night.
Students will be able to acknowledge and make executive decisions to when they need to go to bed (at home) to feel rested and ready for the next day.

Core Integration:
I mentioned earlier about teaching about sleep during the science unit and I think that is where I would connect this website too. I feel like everything I said earlier with the students can relate to the teacher resource.

National Health Education Standards (NHES):
Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

Healthy Behavior Outcomes (HBO):
HBO 3: Get an appropriate amount of sleep and rest.

Internet Source for Parents

The internet site I found is Healthy Children is “powered by pediatricians and trusted by parents.” The information about sleep is in this like and it talks about toddler sleep and baby sleep.

This website includes information about sleep and why it is important. There are also links that include lullabies, bedtime routines, healthy sleep habits, staying out late and curfews, and bunk beds. I think this is a great site with a lot of information for parents since when students are going to sleep, they are at home and with their parents/guardians. What makes this the best site is it has SO much more information about other topics that are helpful for parents. This site helps parents getting their kids into routines for bedtime and other useful information.

I would see myself giving this URL and information home on a newsletter to parents or recommending it to parents who are having trouble with putting their kids to sleep. If I notice that a child is not getting enough sleep or coming to school sleepy, I would talk to the parents and recommend this site to them.

Some other links I thought were useful regarding sleep are The 4 B’s for Bedtime, Separation Anxiety & Sleeping Trouble in Young Children, and Bedtime Routines for School-Aged Children.

If there is a parent if a student in our class that also has a baby, there is information for that too. Click here for that.
